Dories & Stories

Dories and Stories is a unique community-led workshop, in collaboration with Parks Canada, that combines the art of boatbuilding with storytelling, providing participants with a hands-on experience that celebrates the traditions and heritage of the Ingonish region. The program is a partnership between Parks Canada and the local community, and runs from May through October each week at Cop’s Cove in Ingonish, Nova Scotia.

Participants in the Dories and Stories program will have the opportunity to learn about the traditional techniques and methods used to build dories, which are small, flat-bottomed boats used for fishing and transportation in coastal areas. Under the guidance of skilled boat builder, Darcy Harte, participants will work together to construct a dory using time-honored techniques and materials.

As part of the program, participants will also have the opportunity to engage in storytelling sessions with local residents, who will share their experiences and memories of life in Ingonish. These stories will provide a rich and diverse insight into the history and culture of the region, and participants will be encouraged to share their own stories and experiences as well.

Through the combination of boatbuilding and storytelling, the Dories and Stories program offers a unique way for participants to connect with the heritage and traditions of the Ingonish region. By working together to build a dory and sharing stories with one another, participants will gain a deeper appreciation for the community and the people who call it home.

Dories and Stories program is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in learning about traditional boatbuilding techniques and the history and culture of Ingonish. Whether you are a seasoned boat builder or simply interested in exploring the rich heritage of this beautiful coastal community, this program is sure to be a memorable and enriching experience.
